Today, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation automatically restoring the right to vote to more than 80,000 disenfranchised New Jerseyans. Under the new law, individuals will now be able to vote once they are no longer incarcerated, even if they remain on parole or probation.
Gov. Murphy is the second Democratic governor to expand voting rights just this month. Newly-elected Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear signed an executive order automatically restoring the right to vote to over 140,000 former non-violent felons.

“Gov. Murphy’s actions today help strengthen our democracy by making sure more New Jerseyans can have their voice heard in the electoral process. By restoring the right to vote to over 80,000 individuals, Gov. Murphy continues to show his commitment to the unwavering truth that voting is a fundamental right that must be protected. I applaud Gov. Murphy and want to thank him for his leadership.”
