Democratic Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards yesterday signed an executive order creating the Louisiana Complete Count Committee. The committee is tasked with creating 2020 Census Awareness Campaigns that will be conducted across the state. These campaigns will aim to boost awareness of and participation in the 2020 census.
Gov. Edwards is the most recent Democratic governor to take action to ensure a complete count in next year’s census after the Trump administration’s efforts to intimidate hard-to-count populations from participating. On the line is not only billions of dollars in state funding for things like schools and hospitals but the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives and the data used to draw political maps.
